Masayuki Hori
Masayuki Hori (堀 政行 Hori Masayuki) is the president of Roman Academy’s drama club. Although he is very good at acting, his short height makes him unqualified for most lead roles and his skills make him stand out too much to play a side character. Therefore, he works behind the scenes painting sets and making props instead.
Hori also works as Nozaki’s assistant, drawing backgrounds for Let’s Fall in Love in exchange for Nozaki writing drama club scripts.
Contents
Appearance [ ]
Hori is a short young man with short brown hair that is usually styled up with wax. Naturally, his fringe gathers in the centre of his forehead. When asked by Kashima about his hairstyle, he stated that he prefers his hair spiked up since wearing his bangs down makes him look younger.
Hori’s school uniform consists of a blue shirt which is tucked into dark navy blue trousers. He wears a navy blue tie that is usually placed in his pocket when working, but is taken out during school hours or when outside. He also leaves his top button undone with his sleeves being rolled up to his elbows.
During the summer festival, he wore a plain blue shirt which was tucked into dark green pants.
Personality [ ]
Hori is very diligent when it comes to the drama club and never slacks off during rehearsals. On the outside, he comes off as mature and polite; however, Hori has a short temper and is easily angered. This is shown through his violent conduct towards Kashima when she makes inappropriate comments or tries to skip club meetings. He typically uses physical force to get her to behave.
Hori also has a slightly childish side. He has drawn briefs as beta markers on Nozaki’s manga, enthusiastically discussed the former with Sakura, and talked about raw octopus with Kashima in the hot springs. Hori often compares Kashima’s face with others and says that she is the most handsome after all. This is shown through his comparison of Mikoshiba’s face to that of Kashima.
When acting, Hori is very composed and supposedly speaks in a cool tone of voice, according to the Drama Club’s members. He makes plays that aren’t for the purpose of social criticism or to send a message; but rather, plays that students can easily enjoy. The plays he asks Nozaki to write for the club tend to have a princely character in them, and they tend to have romantic plots. Additionally, he is easily absorbed into plays when watching them, crying and laughing.
Skills [ ]
According to Nozaki and Sakura, Hori has a talent for drawing backgrounds due to his comprehensive understanding of perspective. He has given Nozaki a lesson on this, once.
History [ ]
In elementary school, a female classmate gave Hori handmade chocolate that upset his stomach. Ever since then, he disliked handmade food. Despite claiming he won’t eat anything handmade, he will still eat something handmade by someone he knows well. During the Valentines Day arc, Kashima secretly gave Hori handmade chocolates. The author stated that even if she did not do it secretly, Hori would have still eaten it.
According to Kashima, Hori is the person that brought her into the school with his superb acting. He had not known she was a girl, and apparently was surprised when he found out.
After Kashima joined the drama club, Hori quit being an actor, claiming that the club had found the perfect main male character. He started to help make props and direct plays for the drama club, and he found that it was more interesting than acting, which led to him specializing in that aspect.
Relationships [ ]
Yuu Kashima [ ]
While Hori tends to be violent towards Kashima, particularly when she is disrupting the club activities, he appreciates her when she works hard and tries her best. They are very close with each other, and many students suspect that they have feelings for each other. Hori has been described as doting on Kashima like a «loving parent».
Kashima is loyal and fond of Hori. Kashima cares about Hori’s aspirations and goes out of her way to fulfill them. During the course of the series, Kashima has mistaken Hori for wanting to be a princess in a play and thought he wanted to wear feminine attire, such as blouses and skirts. On these occasions, Kashima has tried her best to support Hori by giving him feminine clothes or reassuring him that they are friends; however, Hori reacted badly, thinking that Kashima was making fun of him.
A prominent aspect of their relationship is Hori’s fondness of Kashima’s face, shown by how he insists that Kashima is the most good-looking one, even compared to Mikoshiba. One example of this is when Kashima tries to get him to look at her legs, but Hori instead points out that her eyes look tired. This shows that he observes her face frequently and is able to immediately tell when something is different.
In Chapter 87, Hori realizes that Kashima is his ideal girl. In Chapter 112, he allegedly confesses his feelings to Kashima, but there is no significant change in their relationship.
Umetarou Nozaki [ ]
Nozaki was originally hired by Hori to create scripts for his drama club, and in exchange, Hori would draw backgrounds for his manga. They grew to be friends through their work. Hori usually confides in Nozaki and Sakura in his dealings with Kashima and the drama club. He also asks Nozaki alone for advice in drama club activities.
Chiyo Sakura [ ]
Hori has a good relationship with Sakura. Both are aware of each other’s status as assistant, and he knows about her crush on Nozaki, but doesn’t do much to support the latter. He has asked Sakura to keep his involvement in the manga a secret from Kashima so she doesn’t try to get involved and cause trouble for Nozaki. Sakura tends to be jealous of Hori because he gets to stay overnight at Nozaki’s place to draw backgrounds, and occasionally asks him to teach her.
Hirotaka Wakamatsu [ ]
Hori knows that Wakamatsu is an assistant for Nozaki’s manga. They tend to work together because they help during late nights. Later, he recognizes him as the character model for Waka from Let’s Fall in Love. When he identifies Wakamatsu as Waka and Seo as Oze, he realizes that their real-life relationship also has romantic undertones. They sport a senpai-kouhai type of friendship and occasionally hang out.
Mikoto Mikoshiba [ ]
Hori recognizes Mikoshiba as a close friend of Kashima and Nozaki, and as the character model for Mamiko from Let’s Fall in Love; the latter association is so strong that he mistakenly addresses him as «Mami-koshiba». He genuinely believes that Mikoshiba has the potential to be a good actor for his looks and hard work, but never pursued it because of Mikoshiba’s shyness. In chapter 121, Hori finds out that Mikoshiba draws the special effects, but Mikoshiba is still unaware of his position as the background artist.
Yuzuki Seo [ ]
Hori is not close to Yuzuki in any way. Seo would sometimes address him as «Hori-chan» in school, in which he’d remind her to call him «senpai». He considers her a normal but close friend of Kashima, a very close friend of Wakamatsu, and he recognizes her as the character model for Oze.
Yuu Kashima
Yuu Kashima (鹿島 遊 Kashima Yū) is a friend and classmate of Mikoto Mikoshiba in Class 2-G. She is in the drama club and is considered one of their best actors.
Kashima is quite tall and has a prince-like personality that makes the girls fawn over her, giving her the nickname «The Prince of the School». Mikoto and Kashima considered each other rivals in their first year, but eventually became good friends.
Due to her tendency to ditch the drama club’s activities, Kashima is often dragged by Masayuki Hori to their club. She is also often seen being abused physically by Hori in a comical way, and she is so used to it that she jokes about it.

Appearance [ ]
Kashima is an attractive, androgynous teenage girl with bright green eyes and short, dark blue hair. Her bangs are swept to the left. According to her, she used to have long hair when she was younger and she is also very tall for a girl of her age.
Kashima is commonly seen in the school uniform, which consists of a white blouse with the top button undone with a loose red tie. She wears it with a black jumper that has the school emblem on it. In addition, she wears a navy skirt that ends just above her knees, with a pair of black socks and brown shoes. She wears shorts under her skirt so there’s no trouble when changing clothes for club activities.
Personality [ ]
In addition to her rather androgynous appearance, Kashima also displays a somewhat princely personality, often flirting with the girls and addressing them with the honorific «-hime» («princess»). Additionally, she likes it when girls fuss over her and considers all of them beautiful. She has difficulty working hard.
She has a firm loyalty towards Masayuki Hori, whom she calls Hori-chan-senpai, and often seeks his attention. She tries to please Hori, but more often than not, misunderstands the situation and ends up getting things very wrong. For example, she mistook Hori’s interest in shoujo manga as a desire to dress and act as a girl, and ended up doing embarrassing things to Hori such as leaving skirts in his locker.
History [ ]
According to Kashima, it was because of Masayuki Hori that she decided to enroll in Roman Academy and join the Drama Club. In her third year of middle school, she went to the high school cultural festival and saw Hori’s superb acting.
Relationships [ ]
Masayuki Hori [ ]
Kashima is Hori’s kouhai (junior) in the drama club. She strives to be his number one kouhai, which often causes Hori to be annoyed with her. Their relationship is very close, to the point where they easily get along and often are the first person the other thinks of, but Hori also turns violent when Kashima skips out on club activities or insults him unintentionally. Despite this, she deeply respects and admires him. His acting was the reason why she enrolled in Roman Academy and joined the Drama Club.
Kashima usually refers to Hori whenever asked a question that involves «picturing another person» or an ideal situation to be in. She is easily upset by the idea of not being Hori’s favorite kouhai and will go to extreme lengths to try to secure the position. However, this often backfires and makes Hori act violently towards her. A running gag of the series is that Kashima believes that Hori’s dream is to play the princess. This is because she found a heavily bookmarked copy of «Let’s Fall in Love» in his bag after he threw it at her. She constantly tries to fulfill this dream by doing things such as giving him female clothes, trading her skirt with his pants, and even telling him she’ll help him fulfill his wish.
Kashima and Hori are so close that when they were asked about the previous year’s sports festival, they could only recount seeing each other during the time. Kashima tells Sakura how Hori was an opponent that she could not beat, because even though he was on the other team, whenever he asked her to pass the ball to him, she would gladly do so. Hori tells Mikoshiba that the only thing he can remember about the previous year’s sports festival was Kashima playing in various games.
The others suspect that Kashima likes Hori and vice versa. Kashima told Sakura that she liked Hori, but she said it so lightly that Sakura wasn’t sure what she meant by it. In chapter 65, Kashima and Hori play the fortune-telling game Kokkuri-san, and Sakura asks them to ask Kokkuri-san about who their romantic interest has a crush on. Kashima and Hori are shown not allowing the coin to move, so that it cannot spell anything, as they were both trying to spell different things. Kashima wanted to spell out «Ka-shi-ma» and Hori wanted to spell out «Ka-ku-ni» (meat stew). Background characters also suspect that they like each other, as they get excited whenever Hori is upset or Kashima is acting princely towards Hori.
Kashima once revealed to Sakura that she gave Hori chocolate for Valentine’s Day. She said that since Hori will not eat homemade chocolate, she copied the design of storebought chocolate and gave it to him. However, in an extra, the author reveals that Hori would have eaten her homemade chocolates anyway since he knows Kashima well.
Later Hori shows interest in a picture of a girl’s legs that was taken during the beach chapter. It is revealed that the legs belong to Kashima. Mikoshiba, Sakura, and Nozaki try to make Hori realize those were her legs. It is revealed during this time that Hori only pays attention to Kashima’s face and not her legs.
In chapter 87, Hori gives Kashima a makeover after seeing Mikoshiba’s bad attempt. Another classmate describes it as «[Hori]’s favorite face done in [Hori]’s favorite way», and questions if that is the type he likes the most. Several days later, Hori realizes that Kashima is his ideal girl.
In chapter 112, Nozaki says that Hori confessed his feelings to Kashima. However, as a result, Kashima questions all of Hori’s actions and asks him if he is doing these things because he likes her. This predictably annoys Hori to no end. As described by Mikoshiba, it seems that Kashima cannot trust Hori’s feelings yet.
Mikoto Mikoshiba [ ]
Mikoshiba and Kashima were originally rivals since the first year of High School, but eventually became best friends. Kashima confides in Mikoshiba when she is upset and they tend to invite each other whenever allowed. Mikoshiba assumes that Hori and Kashima like each other and tends to approach their relationship with caution and high expectations. The author states that Kashima likes Mikoshiba because he is «honest and easy to understand».
Chiyo Sakura [ ]
Kashima and Sakura are friends and act very welcoming towards each other. Though Chiyo is dedicated only to Nozaki, she is sometimes affected by Kashima’s charm. Kashima is aware of Chiyo’s one-sided love for Nozaki; she finds it cute and mildly supports it.
Yuzuki Seo [ ]
Due to her tone-deafness, Kashima studies singing under Seo, but with little-to-no improvement. She refers to Seo as «sensei» or «coach»; however, the two are close with each other because of their personalities and the fact that Yuzuki is approximately the same height as Hori. Hori states that he is proud of Kashima for gaining a normal female friend she can get along with.
Hirotaka Wakamatsu [ ]
Wakamatsu and Kashima are not very close. She recognizes him as a close friend of Seo, but thinks that he is somewhat dopey for the actions she has seen from him.
Umetarou Nozaki [ ]
Kashima and Nozaki have no direct connection. She is aware of Sakura’s crush on him and recognizes him as a friend of both Mikoshiba and Hori, as well as a rival for Hori’s attention. Because she doesn’t know that he is a manga author, she finds his behavior weird.
Rei Kashima [ ]
Rei is Kashima’s younger sister in middle school who attends The Ladies Academy, which is three train stations away from Roman High School.
Umetarou Nozaki
Umetarou Nozaki (野崎 梅太郎 Nozaki Umetarō) is the titular main protagonist of the series. He is a high school student at Roman Academy and the subject of Chiyo Sakura’s affection. He works as a manga artist under the pen name Yumeno Sakiko (夢野 咲子 Yumeno Sakiko), and is currently working on the series ‘Let’s Fall in Love’, which is published by Monthly Girls’ Romance.
He is the older brother of Mayu Nozaki and Yumeko Nozaki.
Contents
Appearance [ ]
Nozaki is a tall high school student with short black hair that is swept to the right and sharp black eyes. He has a broad, muscular figure, due training in the past when he was the captain of the basketball club in his middle school.
His school uniform consists of a grey blazer with the school symbol that is worn over a tucked-in collared white shirt, navy blue pants, a skinny red tie, and brown shoes.
Personality [ ]
As an author, Nozaki is a talented manga artist, although he can only draw with a «shoujo» art style. He has a lot of passion for his two main characters, Saburou Suzuki and Mamiko. He is so passionate about manga that his life seems to revolve solely around creating it or doing research for it. For example, he loves Valentine’s Day because the great variety of chocolates, and the pretty packaging make great references. He is easily offended by harsh comments about his work, unless they are fair criticisms said by Chiyo.
Despite making a romance-oriented manga praised for its sensitivity to girls’ feelings, Nozaki has no personal experience in love and is rather blunt towards girls. His story ideas are often ridiculous and far-fetched. He himself has even advised to not take all shoujo manga too seriously and discourages misinformation. He is rather unromantic in real life. He appreciates Chiyo’s drawing ability, but is apparently oblivious to her feelings. Despite him being oblivious to Chiyo’s crush on him, he enjoys her presence and is often seen both around and outside of school with her.
Skills [ ]
As a manga artist, Nozaki has a lot of talent in drawing characters such as Suzuki and Mamiko but cannot create characters without using real people as models. He once tried creating new characters from scratch, but ended up with several male characters that looked identical to his male lead, Suzuki. Thus, he now gathers ideas for characters from people-watching. Along with Chiyo and Mikoto Mikoshiba, his background skills are lacking. Masayuki Hori helps him with the background, but before Hori arrived, Nozaki tried to avoid the problem of drawing backgrounds as much as possible.
Relationships [ ]
Chiyo Sakura [ ]
Nozaki respects and cares for Sakura, despite not noticing her romantic feelings directed towards him. He also admires her artistic skills, as in the past, he had noticed and was impressed by Sakura’s art posters around the school.
Nozaki considers Sakura to be a good friend whom he is willing to confide in, sometimes going out of his way to ensure that she is not upset. He often acts like a worrying mother towards her, showing excessive concern whenever he thinks she is in trouble. He likes cooking for her, and safely assumes that Sakura really likes food as that in his imagination, she’s always eating some sort of snack.
Later chapters in the manga imply that Nozaki may have romantic feelings for Sakura, but they are subconscious feelings that he is not yet aware of. Though Nozaki may be dense, in Volume 9 Chapter 86, Sakura says that her ideal type is someone she has all to herself, which made Nozaki’s heart skip a beat. He began to question his feelings for her in Volume 10 Chapter 96, however, when he asked Kashima what she thought his feelings were, she responded with «motherly instincts».
Mikoto Mikoshiba [ ]
Nozaki and Mikoshiba are very close friends. He met Mikoshiba while studying people for his manga. Mikoshiba wound up being the model for Mamiko, and his assistant in drawing flowers and effects. Mikoshiba sometimes asks Nozaki for advice about his dating games, and he keeps a part of his otaku collection in Nozaki’s apartment. Nozaki sees Mikoshiba as a cute and sensitive person on the inside, hence, calling him ‘Mikorin’ within his head which Sakura also adopted.
Hirotaka Wakamatsu [ ]
Nozaki playing basketball
Nozaki was a starter and the team captain of their middle school’s basketball team, and Wakamatsu was his closest underclassman. Wakamatsu eventually went to the same high school as Nozaki, though his occasional requests for a game are always rejected because Nozaki is worried about injuring his hands.
Wakamatsu ended up assisting the others with Nozaki’s manga, first with erasing, then eventually screentones. As payment for his work, Nozaki gives him Lorelei’s songs to help him sleep, but keeps the singer’s true identity a secret for fear that Wakamatsu will be scarred by the knowledge. Occasionally, Nozaki is burdened by the fact that Wakamatsu doesn’t know Lorelei’s true identity as he (Wakamatsu) praises Lorelei in front of Seo, resulting in Nozaki’s suffering. When Seo proves herself to be Lorelei in Chapter 124, Nozaki is upset that such a major reveal happened without him being there.
Nozaki’s suffering of Wakamatsu praising Lorelei
Wakamatsu usually talks about his personal life and problems to him while working on the manga. They have a good friendship, although Nozaki tends to be strict with Wakamatsu at times.
Masayuki Hori [ ]
Hori works for Nozaki by drawing backgrounds for him. In exchange, Nozaki writes scripts for Hori because Kashima frequently plays the character of a prince, and not many plays include princes. Hori requested that Nozaki doesn’t tell anybody that he helps with the manga, because he is afraid that Kashima will find out and attract all of her fans to Nozaki’s Apartment.
Although Hori and Nozaki get along well, Hori hopes that Nozaki will someday learn to draw backgrounds on his own, but Nozaki is doubtful that will happen. They work together in collecting background references.
Yuzuki Seo [ ]
Nozaki finds Seo’s personality irritating, but he acknowledges that she is oblivious and never expects anything good from her. He is aware of Seo being Lorelei but is dedicated in hiding this from Wakamatsu. Although he initially wants to maintain the secret, when Seo expresses that she wants to tell Wakamatsu the truth, he gets roped in along with Sakura to help her plan it out.
Despite Seo’s beautiful singing, Nozaki is unable to appreciate her songs due to the image her personality creates. A side character, Oze, is modeled after her in Let’s Fall in Love who Nozaki reluctantly writes together with Waka (modeled after Wakamatsu) out of popular demand.
Yuu Kashima [ ]
Nozaki, along with Sakura, is introduced to Kashima through Mikoshiba. Ubeknowest to her, Nozaki is the writer of the scripts the drama club uses, on the request of Hori. However, Nozaki is not a fan of her firtatious nature and cannot write characters based on her, both in scripts and in manga. Though both Mikoshiba and Hori do not want her to find out about the manga, Nozaki believes they are overreacting, and can be careless with what he says in front of her.
He is not very close to her and are more like acquaintances rather than friends.
Ken Miyamae [ ]
Ken Miyamae is Nozaki’s current editor. Nozaki considers him to be more important than a girlfriend because of his competence, especially in contrast with his former editor, Maeno. Nozaki is very desperate for his attention and some involvement in his personal life, even accepting gifts and hoping for small talk. Despite receiving ridiculous drafts and ideas, Ken responds to them immediately, and Let’s Fall in Love remains the shoujo manga it is supposed to be.
Mayu Nozaki [ ]
Mayu’s minimalist texts
Mayu is Umetarou Nozaki’s younger brother. Since Mayu is so lazy, he sends very minimalist texts which only Nozaki is able to understand. When Mayu was little, he was teased for being so quiet, so Nozaki protected him from bullies. As he grew older, Mayu continued to be lazy and reliant upon others.
When Nozaki stopped living with his parents, Mayu was opposed to him leaving, but decided it wasn’t worth the effort to stop him. Despite Mayu’s laziness, the two brothers seem to care for and understand each other very well.
Yumeko Nozaki [ ]
Yumeko is Nozaki’s younger sister. Her favorite manga is Let’s Fall in Love, even declaring that Yumeno Sakiko is her god. She doesn’t believe him when Nozaki says that he is the manga artist. Nozaki tries proving it by signing his autograph, but she remains unconvinced. She also didn’t take him at his word when he told her how he met Sakura and believed it was all in his head.
Nozaki trying to prove he’s Yumeno Sakiko by his signature
Yumeko appreciates her brother because he buys shoujo manga for her. She often gets discouraged when she learns that both Mayu and Nozaki are better at drawing than her. Nozaki tried to help her draw and encouraged her to submit her drawing to the monthly magazine, but since her drawing was so terrible, he wrote that she was 3 years old.
Ryousuke Seo [ ]
Despite Ryousuke’s harshness toward him, Nozaki actually doesn’t mind, but sees Ryousuke as someone ‘cool’. He even wanted to use Ryousuke as a manga reference, due to his waiter uniform he wears at work.
