Heroes (勇者, Yūsha) are people with special powers chosen by the gods, bound by fate to defeat or protect the Demon King to make a peace.
Overview
A maximum of ten heroes are allowed to exist in the world, each of whom have their own unique abilities. As shown with Keyaru, a hero can be identified with the signature insignia they have on the back of their right hand. An exclusive trait to heroes is that they do not have a level cap, and can increase the level cap of other people most efficiently through sexual intercourse. Those in a hero’s party receive double the experience points.
If a hero dies, it takes an average of two years for a replacement to be chosen. During this period, if there exists someone compatible with a mark a deceased hero possessed, it is possible for them to be chosen once they reach a singularity point and take the trial of the hero.
A hero can use what is called a Holy Armament, an object which transforms into a desired power or weapon after forming a contract with the user. The signature weapons of Blade, Bullet and Flare are their respective Holy Armaments given form.
As revealed by Brett, there are some secrets treated as taboo regarding the heroes known by few, for example the true purpose of the heroes’ existence, completely different to the commonly learned objective of defeating the Demon King, it’s protecting it, trying to make humans and demons live together, For example, Keyaru, where he protected Eve Reese, the Demon King Candidate who wanted to kill the incumbent Demon King Hakuou until she became the true Demon King of the Black Wings Tribe (kuyoku).

Initially, Keyaru was a very kind and gentle boy with dreams. When he discovered that he was one of the Heroes who would save the world, he was very excited but he was afraid to use his power when he found out that by healing people, he absorbed their memories and pain.
Post-Betrayal
After being betrayed, imprisoned, drugged, tortured, beaten and raped by several people who wanted to break their level limits for a long period of time, Keyaru’s kind personality changed completely to that of a man vindictive, cruel, brutal, unstable, psychopathic, relentless, bloody and sadistic. Because his naive personality was what allowed him to be exploited, Keyaru replaced his old personality with that of a manipulative and cunning misanthrope.
He completely discarded almost all of his old, kind and generous personality in order to become a sadistic, violent and cold-blooded killer so that he could have his revenge.
Revenge is Keyaru’s primary concern, although at least once he has mentioned the possibility of «living happily» once he has taken vengeance on his abusers. When Setsuna asked him why he seeks revenge so much, Keyaru explains that the idea that those who tortured him can just live their lives without suffering the consequences makes you want to vomit. Another example of his sadistic personality is when Keyaru thoroughly takes pleasure upon taking vengeance, as seen by his happy laughter after having raped Flare and erasing her memories. The only exception shown so far is the Knight Captain as even after Keyaru turned him into a woman and make them raped by his soldiers as revenge for having raped and tired Anna’s death, he displays nor happiness nor satisfaction during it and afterwards, presumably because the Knight Captain’s actions resulted in the death of many of Keyaru’s loved ones. When his first love, Anna and all the villagers in her village were killed by Renard, Keyaru becomes completely cold and suffers extreme levels of despair and anguish after losing his last sheds of humanity by becoming the sole survivor of his now deserted village.
Keyaru also explains to Setsuna that just seeing the suffering of those who made him suffer, Keyaru feels a stimulating feeling and fills his heart with pleasure and satisfaction. Keyaru also laughed madly in glee, delight and satisfaction after having Blade raped and eaten alive by three angry thugs under the influence of an aphrodisiac.
One of Keyaru’s redeeming factors is that he has no desire to harm those who have done him no harm, and in fact makes it a personal rule not to drag them into his revenge; this applies even to people who are otherwise cruel like Princess Norn (until he discovers that she had a hand in executing the captured members of his village). Keyaru also has some sympathy for people who strive for justified revenge the same way he does, and will do his best to help grant them their desire with the condition that they also help him with his.
It is quite difficult to interpret how he really feels about the girls in his party, as he refers to them only as his ´toys´ in his inner thoughts, this implies that he does not really love them and only sees them as simple tools.
However, apart from that and some relatively minor things, like making Freia carry his luggage as a form of revenge for having used him as a pack mule, he treats them only with kindness, in total contrast to his own treatment at the hands of the Flare’s party.
Keyaru has also shown himself to be genuinely enraged whenever any of them are injured, this could be seen when Kureha knocked out Freia. Before that, when two bandits tried to kidnap Freia, Keyaru ordered them not to touch her, being even willing to kill them. But it is not clear that it means that he is more protective of them than he can realize himself, or if he is just simply possessive.
Keyaru has also confessed once that during his travels with his party, even if only sometimes, his thirst for revenge vanishes, but he disregards this when he remembers that she still has people to get revenge on. However, this may be an unconscious way for him to refuse to acknowledge that he is starting to care about other people, out of fear of losing them too.
He has an extremely warped concept of right and wrong, and solely base people on his own stringent criteria. Although he hates those who wronged him in the past, he unconsciously picked up many of their insidious natures. He can be a sadist with an unquenchable thirst for vengeance and is also willing to trick something akin to an offspring of his into sexual intercourse because of her looks, taking advantage of her young naivety.
Previous Timeline
As he was one of the chosen heroes, Flare Arlgrande Jioral took Keyaru from Alban Village to Jioral Kingdom, where he identified himself as the Healing Hero. Unfortunately for Keyaru, prejudice against the healer class resulted in Flare, the Heroes and Jioral Kingdom abusing and torturing Keyaru to the point where he was addicted to a healing drug Flare fed him to keep him in line. While Traveling with Flare, Blade, and Bullet, he was often sexually and physically abused by all three. Developing an immense hatred towards them, he eventually develops a resistance to the drug and is able to maintain his sanity. However, as he was aware that he would be unable to take any of the heros in a fight, he kept quite and pretended to still be dependent on the drug. At some point the group met up with Norn, with her discerning that he wasn’t broken. Intrigued by him, she decided not to tell the others on the condition the Keyaru entertains her.
When the heroes are incapacitated by the current Demon King, Keyaru is able to defeat and reveals him to be a silver-haired woman. Using the Philosopher’s Stone he obtained from her, Keyaru declares vengeance on Flare before reversing time by four years.
Current Timeline
After reversing time, he woke up in his house in Alban Village. He couldn’t remember anything and told Anna that he had had a ‘nightmare’. But he didn’t tell her about a weird voice in his head, telling him what he must do. When asked about which job he would choose when it comes to his 15th birthday, he said that he didn’t have any orientation and go out to harvest apples. However, a monster attacked the village and intended to kill Anna. The voice told him about its cons and he was able to defeat it, despite not having any experience in fighting with monsters.
Afterwards, Keyaru goes into the woods and obtains the ability to read the statuses of others from the spirit of the stars. This process takes 5 days. Two days after, he is 15 years old and chosen to be a Hero. During the next 5 days, he eats numerous nacrotic and toxic mushrooms every day to develop his poison resistance. Eventually, Flare comes to his village and Keyaru reveals himself as the Healing Hero. She then takes him to the royal capital of the Jioral Kingdom.
When he is finally called to restore Kureha Clyret’s arm, Keyaru takes some of her experience and pretends to faint to get a look at Flare’s reaction. Upon seeing that she gave up on him the first time he used his Heal ability, Keyaru takes delight in how he won’t feel guilty taking revenge. Later, Keyaru is given a cup of drugged tea by Flare and after he drinks it, he falls unconscious. He later wakes up chained in a prison cell. In confinement, Keyaru is raped by soldiers who want to increase their level cap nearly every day while the drug is repeatedly used on him. He keeps enough sense to steal experience from soldiers raping him, and after several weeks he acquires drug resistance to prevent him from succumbing to Flare’s drug anymore.
Keyaru soon finds out that nearly everyone in his village was rounded up for execution as a way to draw him out. Upon learning that Anna was raped by the knight captain, Keyaru exacted his revenge on the captain by turning him into a woman and brainwashing the captain’s men to rape him to death, before setting the house they are in on fire. He then tries to save Anna but it’s fails. The following day, Keyaru goes to the coliseum to try and save the rest of the villagers but learns the fact that they were poisoned to ensure that wouldn’t be possible. Despite this, he is able to turn the spectators against the authorities by having Freia adopt Flare’s appearance and inform them of the kingdom’s atrocities.
Powers & Abilities
Heal: By healing things and concepts, Keyaru performs various abilities from the Healer Class:
Jade Eyes/The Eyes of Truth: Also known as «The Eyes of the Spirits» and «The eyes that can see through all things in the universe», is a pair of powerful magic eyes that Keyaru obtained by making a pact with the spirit of the stars. It allows him to perceive the mana floating in the atmosphere, the leylines, information about the target’s true name and their stats, such as Magical defense, Physical defense, Level, Mana, Health, Class, Abilities, Passives, and Speed. After the events in Volume 4 of the light novel, one of the jade eyes gets turned into a different magic eye.
Eye of Precognition: Also known as the «The Eye of the Divine Bird», is a powerful magic eye that Keyaru obtained as a reward for passing the divine bird Caladorius’ trial. It allows him to see few seconds into the future, enabling him to evade and counter enemy attacks.
Drug Resistance: Thanks to having trained his body extensively by consuming massive amounts of toxic mushrooms and having subsequently shaken off the effect of Flare’s drug, Keyaru is immune or incredibly resistant to the effect of most poisons and drugs. This is what allows him to use his alchemical grenades to great effect, as the fumes that are debilitating to others have absolutely no effect on Keyaru.
Increased EXP Gain: Being one of the heroes allows him and his party members to gain double the EXP, stacking multiplicatively with the other heroes if they are in the same party.
Intelligence: Keyaru is extremely intelligent and cunning. He is shown to have an impressive knowledge of magical theory, being able to develop many unconventional uses for his own Heal spell, teach Freia how to best use her magic to her advantage, and rig an enchantment to his own benefit. He is skilled at developing strategies and tactics to ensure that any battle he partakes in swings to his advantage as much as possible. This is best illustrated during his assault on the Arena, wherein he not only infiltrates the place several weeks in advance to stealthily tamper with its defenses, but also develops a plan to swing the hearts of Jioral Kingdom’s residents in favor of his cause. Keyaru is manipulative and knows exactly which buttons to press to turn a person into a loyal follower, as shown with Setsuna and Eve Reese.
Alchemy: Keyaru is a skilled alchemist due to having copied the skill from Watilda, a master alchemist, while regrowing both of his arms in the Rai Nara room. He is able to magically «transmute» matter into other forms, as seen for example when he turns a lead pipe into a key. He is also a capable creator of airborne poisons, such as an aphrodisiac that makes the target too sexually excited to fight, or a deadly paralytic agent. He keeps them in flasks that he shatters against the ground when needed, letting the deadly vapors spread. He also has needles to inject the poisons directly into a target for added effect.
Holy Sword: Keyaru is a skilled swordsman due to having copied the skill from Kureha Clyret while regrowing her arm in the current timeline. While the skill nowhere near Kureha’s level and Keyaru does not have the ability to defeat her in an honest sword fight, his skill is sufficient enough to defeat nearly anyone else with a sword, especially when he reallocates his stats before a fight.
Elemental Magic: Keyaru copied Flare’s ability to cast magic for all elements.

Etymology
His real name Keyaru (ケヤル), fake name Keyaruga (ケヤルガ), and his feminine name he used while disguising as a girl Keara (ケアーラ), are all similar to healing magics from the Final Fantasy video game series (Cure, Curaga and Cura, respectively), as opposed to Flare’s name associating with an offensive magic.

Personality
As Flare
On the outside, Flare appears to be a kind, graceful and honest woman who is able to become very popular due to her charms and beauty. In reality, Flare is unbelievably self-centered and thinks of herself as superior to everyone, especially to Keyaru, a mere farmer and a Hero with no offensive capabilities; because of the latter prejudice, she sees him as no more than a tool only useful for carrying the group’s equipment, serving as a whipping boy, increasing the level cap of her servants and on occasion casting Heal.
Incredibly sadistic, she tortured Keyaru at every turn, beat him regularly and forced him to do tricks like a dog in order to get the drug she got him addicted to. However, Flare is also cowardly, as she begged Keyaru for forgiveness after the latter manages to ambush her.
Although manipulative enough to be able to conceal her true nature from the people of the Kingdom, she is ultimately portrayed as a rather clueless person, her own sister considering her useful solely as a weapon of mass destruction. When she sees Keyaru faint after healing Kureha, she immediately dismisses him as completely useless, and has to be told by her court mage that he has in fact performed some very high-level magic. Her arrogance is on full display once Keyaru strikes back against her, as even when she is completely at his mercy, she still behaves herself arrogantly towards him and insults him for being low-born, which only infuriates the Healer Hero even further.
As Freia
After being brainwashed by Keyaruga, Freia is now completely loyal to him and genuinely in love with him. She is also far more kinder than her former self, as she treats Setsuna as a friend in spite of how her nation abuses demi-humans.
Ironically, she now displays a strong sense of justice and will be the first to claim that they have to save people whenever the Jioral Kingdom’s forces abuse innocents. This amuses Keyaru to no end, as he knows what kind of person she used to be before this and feels like it’s hypocritical for Freia to hold such views. Keyaru has noted that despite her memory being changed her personality is still the same in regards to how she views all other humans besides Keyaru and those she has come to care about, therefore she doesn’t mind or hold it against him when he kills people who deserve it.
Becoming an amnesiac has made Freia more naive than before. Keyaru even has to teach her how to use her spells properly, since even though she retained her knowledge on how to cast them, all of her experience with their use disappeared along with her memories.
Despite her amnesia, Freia still harbors some traits of her former personality, such as her talent in manipulation and lying. Additionally, Freia is able to impersonate her former self flawlessly.
Previous Timeline
Flare originally found Keyaru in his village and took him back to the capital to train him as a hero after identifying him as one. However, once she found out Keyaru’s status as a Healer Hero, as well as his reluctance to use his magic, Flare abused him and treated him as a slave, feeding him an addictive drug to make him submissive for 4 years.
She and Keyaru end up as the only survivors in the heroes’ battle against the current demon lord. Flare tries to persuade Keyaru to give her the Philosopher’s Stone, but Keyaru is able to deduce her intention to use it for world domination. After Keyaru decides to use the item to rewind time, Flare is unable to do anything but insult him before he activates the stone.
Current Timeline
Once Keyaru traveled back from the future and took countermeasures to deal with the drug, he was recruited again by Flare, and the same events unfolded for a month. Keyaru then regains his mind from the drugs, he vows to fully take his revenge. After Keyaru escapes captivity, Flare is subject to physical torture and rape before having her appearance modified and memories erased.
After she woke up, Keyaru convinced her that she was Freia, his lover and slave. She submissively accepts having sexual intercourse with him and afterwards, joins him as his follower and the magician hero.
Powers
Elemental Magic: As the Magic Hero, Flare specializes in casting devastating offensive magic, particularly area of effect spells that can decimate an entire army. At the beginning of the series, she is seen casting magic of the seventh tier. As Freia, she seems to be able to go only up to the fifth tier, but this is likely because she is lower level than she was in the prologue rather than because of her memory loss, but in later volumes after recovering her Holy Armament Freia recovers the ability to do seventh tier spells being able to cast them consecutive times.
Flare is able to cast formidable magic affiliated with various elements, including lightning, fire, ice, earth and wind. A normal mage can only master one or two elements, but as a Hero, Flare is capable of using every single element and combine several spells to devastating effect. Unfortunately, as Freia, her memory loss causes her to lose her combat experience with her spells. One of her favorite techniques, as taught to her by Keyaru, is combining ice projectiles with a burst of wind to increase their range.
Level Cap Break: Being one of the heroes allows her to level up as much as she wants without having a level limit.
Increased EXP Gain: Being one of the heroes allows her and her party members to gain double the EXP, stacking multiplicatively with the other heroes if they are in the same party.
Hero Detection: As the Magic Hero, Flare has the power to find other Heroes and is the only one of the Heroes with this ability.

Her real name Flare (フレア) is written the same way as one of the ultimate offensive magic in Final Fantasy video game series as opposed to Keyaru’s name associating with a healing magic.
Alternatively, her name could be a reference to the goddess Freya from the Norse mythology. This also applied to her fake name Freia (フレイア). Her weapon Vanargand and her ultimate attack «Mjolnir» are also referred to the Norse goddess.
